The 2019 Radiosurgery Society Annual Scientific Meeting

Professor David Joseph presents at the Radiosurgery Society Annual Scientific Meeting – March 2019, San Diego USA

Professor Joseph is a founding member and previous chair of TROG (Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group) which undertakes Cancer Research and has been improving the way in which Radiotherapy is delivered to cancer patients for almost 30 years.

Professor David Joseph presented two papers on the 10 year, final results of his latest research into the treatment of Prostate Cancer. The objective of this (RADAR) trial, was to study the relative effects of radiation dose escalation and androgen suppression duration over 6 vs 18 months, on distant progression.

The trial demonstrated that High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy boost for high grade prostate cancer reduced the risk of death at 10 years by 30%.

HDR brachytherapy is a surgical procedure which requires theatre and hospital time where the patient will have 15 needles inserted into the perineum for 2 – 3 days.

Professor Joseph is conducting a feasability study, at 5D Clinics, to determine if Virtual HDR brachytherapy using the CyberKnife® has similar clinical benefits. A major consideration is that it is an outpatient treatment and does not require invasive procedures.
