It can be hard to know how to best support a friend or family member who has been diagnosed with cancer.
Here are some tips on how to help your loved ones during this challenging time.
Be there for them and tell them that you care
Phone or reach out with a message or note to let them know that you are here and are thinking of them. You may be worried about whether you are intruding or what the right thing to say might be, but it is better to show that you care, even if you don’t know how to express it.
Listen to what they have to say
Hold a space for them to express their feelings or say nothing at all without comparing their cancer to others or telling them what they can try to cure it.
Try to treat them as you always have
Allow them to discuss their cancer without forgetting to touch on other common interests you share. Remember that their cancer doesn’t define them.
Offer support during their treatment
You can offer support to your loved one during their treatment by keeping them company or offering to drive them to and from appointments or collect prescriptions. Being physically present with someone during treatment can be a welcome distraction. You might like to bring a book, puzzle, a small gift or something practical to give them comfort and lift their spirits.
Help with meals
Helping with meals is a great way to ensure your loved one maintains good nutrition during treatment. You could send a care package, make a supply of homemade meals to keep in the freezer, start a cooking roster with friends and family, or do the grocery shopping.
Assist with household tasks
Helping with household tasks such as cleaning, laundry, or gardening can be a big relief for your loved ones and their families during cancer treatment, especially if they are experiencing fatigue.
Support their family
Managing cancer treatment with family commitments can be very difficult. You may like to offer to help with childcare, picking their children up from school, or feeding or walking their pets.
